Veteran singer BoA has recently come under fire after a controversial appearance in a livestream with broadcaster Jun Hyun Moo, during which her candid, and at times abrasive, remarks sparked heated debate online.
The livestream, which aired on April 5 and took place at Jun Hyun Moo’s home, was informal and alcohol-fueled, giving fans a raw glimpse into their off-camera dynamic. The two appeared relaxed as they shared wine, but BoA’s uninhibited speech and unfiltered opinions quickly drew criticism from viewers.
At one point, leaning heavily on Jun Hyun Moo and speaking with slurred words, BoA pointed to him and said, “This oppa’s real self is what you see on this broadcast,” while repeatedly forming an 'X' with her fingers. She then told viewers, “You shouldn’t like Jun Hyun Moo.”
The broadcast took a more controversial turn when Jun Hyun Moo read a viewer comment referencing rumors that he was dating comedian Park Na Rae. Before he could even respond, BoA interjected bluntly: “I don’t think so.” Jun Hyun Moo, taken aback, responded, “You answered before I even could,” to which BoA insisted again, “You and her can’t be dating each other.”
When Jun Hyun Moo jokingly asked if that was because Park Na Rae was “too good” for him, BoA doubled down with the unexpected comment: “No, you’re too good for her.” Jun Hyun Moo, visibly stunned, reminded her, “You sure about this? This is going livestream,” to which BoA shrugged off the concern and replied, “Doesn’t matter to me.”
In response to her increasingly blunt tone, Jun Hyun Moo commented, “Wow, she’s really going off the rails,” after which BoA shouted, “I’m more of an AfreecaTV person,” implying her demeanor was better suited to a looser, less formal streaming platform.
These remarks, particularly the comments about Park Na Rae, triggered an online debate. Many netizens criticized BoA for what they perceived as disrespectful behavior toward the comedian. Some expressed shock, saying, “What makes this worse is that BoA seems completely serious.” While a portion of viewers called for a public apology due to the livestream’s public nature, others argued such a step might be unnecessary.
Still, a general consensus emerged that the incident would be remembered as a misstep in BoA’s career, especially considering how her behavior under the influence affected Park Na Rae’s image the most.
The controversy didn’t end there. Throughout the livestream, BoA continued making remarks that many found off-putting. She bluntly criticized Jun Hyun Moo’s home, saying, “Hyun Moo oppa’s house is really dirty. It’s a mess.” She also slammed his interior design choices and complained, “The guest bathroom is so dirty. At the very least, there shouldn’t be a smell. The smell is just awful.” Jun Hyun Moo laughed it off, replying, “I think I’m going to have to tear the whole house apart. We met up and all she did was criticize the interior.”
In another moment, a viewer commented that they were a first-generation member of BoA’s fanclub, ‘Jumping BoA.’ BoA replied, “Thank you. You must be a bit older,” a comment that drew some awkward reactions from fans online.
The topic of alcohol remained a theme throughout the broadcast. When a viewer asked for food recommendations, BoA answered, “It depends on the type of alcohol.” Jun Hyun Moo tried to steer the conversation elsewhere, saying, “Can we please eat without drinking alcohol?” BoA retorted informally, “You’re the one who said we should drink. You said it, just now,” noticeably dropping the use of honorifics in the exchange.
As the livestream continues to trend online, BoA has yet to issue any public response or clarification. Meanwhile, reactions remain divided, some defending her honesty, others questioning the appropriateness of her words in a public setting.
